Texas Sues Meta’s Facebook over Users’ Personal Data Leak
On February 14, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton charged Facebook with its illegal use of users’ face recognition.
According to the lawsuit, the social network was gathering all sensitive biometric information on its users from Texas based on their uploaded media files. In brief, Facebook was mentioned to apply its proprietary “tagging” system to link users’ faces and profiles across the social medium.
The Office of the Attorney General claimed such a data collection would be used by third parties without users’ permission. Currently, 20 million Texans are registered on Facebook which poses imminent risks of personal data breach.
“These claims are without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously,” a Meta spokesperson responded to the accusations.
Previously Meta’s Facebook was obliged to compensate $650 million for the same unauthorized use of personal data in Illinois.
